Brahmatal Trek

Brahmatal: Get closer to Nature

Brahmatal Trek is one of the best winter trek in Himalaya. The Lake, Brahmatal is dedicated to Lord Brahma. The snow filled trails and beautiful campsites make Brahmatal as an all in one package among other Himalayan Treks. Located around 12,000 feet up this Trek exposes you to various peaks namely Mt. Trishul, Mt. Nandaghunti among others.

The trail is in between full of Rhododendron and Oak forests and that is why you don’t have any regret if there is no snow! Yes! I know Brahmatal is famous for winter trek but the clear views of white peaks from the top will make you fall in love with the trail. In peak winter months you get snow covered trails and if you are here in March-April ,then you will mesmerized by the pink shades of Rhodos.

So, this March I decided to go for Brahmatal, and after getting all the survival essentials packed in my rucksack I boarded my train from Howrah railway station. It was a 35 hours long journey to Kathgodam.

Kathgodam :

We reached Kathgodam Railway Station at 9:00 am and greeted by Raju bhaiya with his tempo traveller, waiting to take all of us to Lohajung, the basecamp of Brahmatal Trek. It was almost 10-11 hour journey via road and it exposed us to the breathtaking view of Uttarakhand.

Lohajung :

We reached at 8 pm and met our trek leader, a nice and very cheerful guy. He briefed us on what are the expectations on our first day of trek starting from next morning. Then we had our dinner and slept well under our cosy blankets.

Day 1: Lohajung to Gujreni ~

A beautiful sunrise welcomes us in the morning of our first day. We ate our breakfast. The guide checked our BP and we are ready to go!

The Trek started. The ascending trail through a beautiful village between rhododendron trees took us to a different world separated from the crowd. It takes 3 hours to reach our first campsite Gujreni. A beautiful place surrounded by green oak and rhododendrons helped us to forget our tiredness. They served our dinner at 8 pm and everyone off to their tents.

Day 2: Gujreni to Tilandi Top

The day 2 was really surprising. At first we reached a small dried lake and just above this there is Bekaltal. A brown water lake surrounded by Oak forests. From here a steep climb brings you to the most beautiful campsite where the tree line ends and you enter the meadows.

AND yes! right in front of you is Mt. Trishul and Mt. Nandaghunti with panoramic view! The campsite was immensely beautiful and we were mesmerized by the sunset over there. At night it feels magical with the countless number of stars.

Day 3: Tilandi to Brahmatal

This was the most beautiful trail of the entire trek! that day we start early and reach Jhandi top where I feel right next to Mt.Trishul. From here a pretty adventurous ridge walk to Brahmatal Top opens up Ali bugyal so close and the 360 view from the top is really special.

From here finally we walked downwards to Brahmatal lake which is just some meters away from your last campsite and gives a perfect reflection of sunset.

Day 4: Brahmatal to Lohajung

It was the last day of our trek. Though it was almost descent majorly but we started early as we have to cover 10 km in one go, and remember the downhill will always test your knees. As we know this trek is named after mythical tales of the lord Brahma, we saw a temple of the god at 11,000 feet.

We had our packed lunch on our way and also had some rhododendron juice at a local shop, it was nice. I met some children playing in the village and they were super cute. We reached lohajung after 4 pm just because it was our last day and we were taking rest everywhere. And my first trek in Uttarakhand was a success!

Next day we have the same driver for transport to Kathgodam and after dinner we boarded for our return journey with so many memories for life.

So, this Trek has walk between forests, two Beautiful lakes, one of the best ridge walks, great campsites and obviously grand views of white himalayan range. Having slightly moderate trails this trek needs you to have basic fitness.

PREPARE WELL AND PACK YOUR BAG!
