The Mt Black Peak Expedition, also known as the Kalanag Expedition, is a challenging trek reserved for experienced mountaineers. Soaring to a height of 6,387 meters (20,950 ft) in the Garhwal Himalayas, Mt Black Peak offers breathtaking scenery and a true sense of accomplishment for those who reach the summit. The “Black Peak” name comes from the local dialect due to the peak’s resemblance to a black cobra from a certain angle.
The trek takes you through a diverse landscape, including alpine meadows, dense forests, moraines, and glaciers. Be prepared for thrilling sections that require technical climbing skills, including a challenging 75-foot vertical ice wall with a 70-degree incline.
The nearest major city is Dehradun. From there, you can take a taxi or jeep to Sankri, the starting point for most expeditions.
The ideal time for the Mt Black Peak Expedition is typically between May and June and September to October. These windows offer better weather conditions for climbing at high altitudes. However, keep in mind that weather in the Himalayas can be unpredictable, so be prepared for all conditions.
The Black Peak Expedition is a challenging and demanding trek. It requires a high level of fitness, excellent mountaineering skills, and experience with using technical climbing equipment in high altitude environments.
